Our Purpose
At the Oconee History Museum, we bring history to life through exhibits, educational programs and special events
Our Mission
Oconee History Museum preserves and promotes the cultural heritage of Oconee County, South Carolina. We conduct research and curate exhibits to tell stories of the people and places that shaped Oconee County.
Our Story
Oconee History Museum began as an idea in 1999 when a group of concerned citizens saw a need for the preservation and interpretation of Oconee County’s heritage.
It was decided to house the museum in Walhalla inside an old tobacco factory that was built circa 1892. Renovations of the building were completed in 2004 and the newly organized Oconee History Center opened to the public that year. Since then, the name was changed to the Oconee History Museum.
Each year, thousands of visitors enjoy the museum’s spacious exhibit hall and vast collection of artifacts that illustrate the diverse history and heritage of Oconee County, SC.
