Seneca is celebrating its Sesquicentennial!

In August 1873 the first auction of lots for Seneca City occurred. J.J. Norton and Alfred W. Thompson planned Seneca City to grow around the Blue Ridge Railroad and the newly established Atlanta and Richmond Airline Railroad, which were coming through the area. One month after the auction of lots the first passenger train for the Atlanta and Richmond Airline Railroad arrived on September 28, 1873.

On March 14, 1874 Seneca City was officially incorporated by the South Carolina Legislature. In 1908, the town name was simplified to Seneca. In 1874, Seneca City’s incorporated limits were about 1,054 acres, roughly 1 1/2 miles. Today, Seneca’s incorporated limit is close to 8 miles.

We have chosen a few artifacts and photographs to share with you to celebrate this momentous occasion.
