Virginia Pierce with the University of South Carolina libraries will discuss the South Carolina Digital Newspaper Program.
The South Carolina Digital Newspaper Program (SCDNP) at the University of South Carolina Libraries is one of many state programs participating in the National Digital Newspaper Program, a national effort to preserve and increase access to America’s historical newspapers. Since 2009, SCDNP has digitized more than 300,000 pages and 100 historical South Carolina newspapers, including many upstate newspapers like the Keowee Courier, Pickens Sentinel, and the Easley Messenger. All of these newspapers are freely accessible, full text searchable, and are browse-able in the Library of Congress’ Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers, a newspaper database containing more than 9 million newspaper pages from across the United States. This valuable program has been made possible through grants funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and administered the Library of Congress (LC). Come learn more about the program and how to conduct research of digitized South Carolina newspapers in Chronicling America.
